Encaustics

Greek, "to heat" or "to burn"

Encaustics is a process of painting with pigmented wax.  It was a process used by the Egyptians to create wax portraits of the deceased.  Thin wooden panels were usually used for painting with this molten wax, however linen was also used.  The original portraits were designed to be bound to the head area of the mummy wrappings, so the use of a flexible material was best.  I have created pieces using both wood, as well as on stretched canvas.

Over the last 50 years it has undergone a revival.  The technique is variable from artist to artist, and I have taken to not only create entirely wax creations but have also incorporated additional objects to create an encaustic collage.  I use beeswax, and add my own pigments to create the colors I want.

One question that is always asked is "Will it Melt".  Yes it will melt, but at between 145-150 degrees F, it will take a very warm house to hurt it.  I wouldn't leave it in the trunk of my car in the middle of summer, and like any fine art you wouldn't want to leave it in direct sunlight, which could create a magnifying glass affect and damage or even melt the art.
